The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has opened an investigation into the death of post‑basic nursing student Taiwo Godwin, who died while receiving treatment for an asthma attack at the hospital’s General Medical Practice Unit.

According to reports, Godwin experienced breathing difficulties while playing football and was rushed to the hospital. A colleague who witnessed his arrival said the student was still able to walk into the emergency unit, but his condition later deteriorated.

The eyewitness alleged that medical personnel on duty failed to administer oxygen despite the worsening situation. The claim further states that although oxygen equipment was placed on the patient, the supply was not switched on, and that staff encountered difficulties securing intravenous access and the patient’s airway.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the hospital’s management expressed sadness over the tragedy and said the investigation would be conducted in accordance with established procedures. The statement, signed by Public Relations Officer Mr Abiola Ajibola on behalf of the Acting Provost and Medical Director, pledged a thorough, impartial and transparent inquiry.

“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served,” the statement read.
“While we appreciate the concerns and emotions surrounding this tragic event, we urge the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudice to its findings,” it added.

The hospital affirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and the highest standards of care, and said it would cooperate with relevant authorities. Condolences were extended to Godwin’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider nursing community.
