Vice‑presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said that a government led by former governor Peter Obi would bring back a fuel subsidy, but in a “different form.”
Kwankwaso told the Punch that the NDC’s approach would focus on investing in domestic refineries rather than continuing the current subsidy model that has long been a source of fiscal strain for the Nigerian government.
Under the proposed plan, the government would use the revenue from newly upgraded or built refineries to reduce the cost of fuel for consumers, effectively creating a subsidy that is generated from local production rather than from the federal budget.
The NDC has positioned itself as a pro‑investment party, and Kwankwaso’s comments come amid growing calls across the country for a more sustainable way to manage the fuel subsidy, which has historically been a major line item in Nigeria’s annual budget.
While the party has not yet released a detailed policy brief, Kwankwaso’s statement signals a shift in how the NDC intends to address the fuel subsidy issue if it wins the upcoming election.
