Nvidia’s board announced Sunday that it will launch an independent investigation into reports that CEO Jensen Huang had an extramarital affair with a woman alleged to have spied for the Chinese government. In an email to employees, Huang acknowledged the affair, apologizing to his wife, children, colleagues, board, partners and shareholders and pledging to work to regain their trust.
The board said a committee of independent directors, assisted by outside independent counsel, will oversee the inquiry. While the board stated it has “no reason to believe that either national security or NVIDIA secrets were compromised,” the investigation will examine all available information.
The allegations stem from recent reporting that a Chinese national named Alice Huang, a former leader at Megaspeed—a Nvidia chip customer—maintained a well‑documented relationship with Jensen Huang and may have acted as an intelligence asset for Beijing, according to a New York Times article citing U.S. intelligence assessments.
Yorkville Ives partner Dan Ives described the probe as a “black eye” for Huang and warned it could trigger multiple congressional investigations. Ives said investors will be focused on whether Huang will remain CEO, noting that while he is likely to stay in the role in the near term, the board’s findings could lead to his removal, adding risk to Nvidia’s stock.
The scrutiny comes amid ongoing tension over Nvidia’s sales to China. The U.S. government has banned the export of Nvidia’s advanced AI chips to the country, a restriction the company has lobbied against, arguing that its processors are better for global use.
