On Thursday, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) announced a formal investigation after the deaths of several suspected illegal miners who were arrested during enforcement operations in Niger State on 15 and 16 September 2026.
The arrests took place in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis as part of a coordinated operation by the Niger State Command aimed at curbing illegal mining and safeguarding the country’s natural resources, according to National Public Relations Officer ACC Babawale Afolabi.
Commandant General Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi ordered the formation of a high‑powered investigative team, led by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation. The team will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including the suspects’ condition at arrest, the duration and conditions of their custody, medical care received, and any other relevant factors.
“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital, Minna for medical examination and determination of the actual cause of death,” said a NSCDC spokesperson. “We will refrain from speculation until the outcome of the medical examination is established.”
The Corps is working with health authorities and sister security agencies to ensure appropriate medical and public‑health measures are taken. It also directed that the health and welfare of all persons currently in custody be given utmost priority and that personnel who may have had contact with the deceased be protected.
NSCDC extended its condolences to the families of the victims and pledged a thorough, fact‑based inquiry into the incident. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal mining while upholding the dignity, safety and fundamental rights of every individual in its custody.
