The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has refunded more than ₦14.2 million to enrollees and suspended nine hospitals after a wave of complaints about the quality of services they provide.
According to the authority, the refunds were issued in response to patients who reported inadequate care, delays in treatment and other service failures at the affected facilities. The total amount refunded to patients exceeds ₦14.2 million.
In addition to the refunds, NHIA has placed nine hospitals under suspension. The suspension is intended to prompt a review of the hospitals’ compliance with the authority’s standards and to protect patients from further sub‑standard care.
NHIA’s actions come as part of its ongoing effort to enforce quality standards across the Nigerian health insurance scheme. The agency has repeatedly warned providers that non‑compliance could result in penalties or suspension of accreditation.
Enrollees who received refunds can now access the funds, while the suspended hospitals are required to address the complaints before they can resume operations under the national health insurance scheme.
