South Korea has blamed North Korea for mines that caused a series of blasts along the border on 21 September, demanding that the North apologise and remove other unexploded mines.

The blasts, which occurred along the heavily fortified demilitarised zone, were attributed by Seoul to mines planted by Pyongyang. South Korean officials said the incident highlighted the ongoing danger posed by hidden ordnance in the area.

In a statement, the South Korean government urged North Korea to issue an apology and to clear any remaining mines that could threaten civilians and military personnel on both sides of the border.

The Korean Peninsula has been divided since the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953, and the border remains one of the most heavily militarised in the world. Tensions have flared periodically over the years, with both sides exchanging accusations and threats.

South Korea’s call for an apology and mine removal comes amid a broader push for de‑escalation and confidence‑building measures between the two Koreas, as the region watches closely for any further incidents that could destabilise the fragile status quo.
