North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the East Sea on Saturday, a day after it denied Seoul’s claim that its naval mines had injured South Korean soldiers in the Demilitarised Zone.
The missile was launched from the Wonsan area at about 6.30 a.m. and travelled more than 700 kilometres (434 miles) into the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korean military.
The launch came after Kim Jong‑un’s sister publicly criticised South Korea for alleging that North Korean mines had caused the injuries. The South Korean defence ministry said it was analysing the test for details.
Washington and Seoul are also reviewing the missile flight, with officials monitoring the test for technical and strategic implications.
North Korea’s recent missile activity follows a series of tests that have heightened tensions in the region, though the government has not provided further details about the device or its intended target.
