The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has condemned a statement attributed to Minister of Works and former governor David Umahi, who allegedly said he would “kill” the PDP and “unalive” the party if it tried to regain relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abakaliki, PDP Publicity Secretary Prince Darlington Peter Onwe said the remark was “disturbing and inappropriate in a democratic environment.” Onwe added that the comment was reportedly made in response to a question about Umahi’s support for the PDP’s governorship candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii.
The PDP is a political organisation, not an individual. It cannot be killed or unalive by any politician.
Onwe urged Umahi to clarify his words and called on political leaders in Ebonyi to exercise restraint as the 2027 elections approach. He warned that political disagreements should be settled through policy debate rather than language that could be interpreted as a threat to a party’s existence. The PDP also recalled past election cycles in the state that were marred by intimidation, stressing the need for responsible political communication.
Stating that political parties are institutions that can outlive individual politicians, the PDP reaffirmed its commitment to pursue its objectives through peaceful, constitutional means. It called on its members and supporters to remain calm and law‑abiding, and urged security agencies to monitor statements that might heighten political tension. “Elections are decided by the people, not by declarations that one politician has killed or will kill a political party,” the party said, reminding voters that the ballot belongs to the people of Ebonyi State.
