The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Director‑General Mr Idris has warned that no government will use an Ebola outbreak as a political weapon. Speaking to the media, he dismissed calls to postpone the upcoming elections on the basis of the disease.

“There is currently no reason to postpone the elections, but a widespread outbreak could raise public health concerns,” Mr Idris said, according to a report by Premium Times.

Idris highlighted that the NCDC remains vigilant in monitoring disease threats across the country, but stressed that democratic processes should not be disrupted unless a clear public‑health emergency arises.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about the safety of holding elections during a period of heightened disease surveillance. The NCDC’s stance is that any decision to delay voting would be taken only if a serious outbreak threatened the health of voters and staff.

By affirming that the elections should proceed unless a widespread outbreak demands otherwise, the NCDC DG underscored the balance between maintaining democratic continuity and safeguarding public health.
