Akwa United have officially appointed defender Charles Etim as their new team captain, according to reports from the Daily Post. The appointment marks a transition in leadership for the club as they prepare for the upcoming football season.
Etim assumes the captaincy following the departure of his predecessor, Ubong Essien, who transferred to Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Katsina United at the conclusion of the last season. A former member of both the Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles youth teams, Etim served as the club's assistant captain during the previous campaign.
The new captain will head a four-man leadership group designed to guide the squad. This group includes Flying Eagles defender Somto Nnoli, goalkeeper Okechukwu Johnson, and Paulinus Okon. Okon, who was recognized as Akwa United's Player of the Season last term, will continue to play a pivotal role in the team's structure.
Manager Paul Offor is set to lead the squad into their first competitive fixture of the season. The team is scheduled to open their campaign against Ekiti United on Sunday, 8 November.
The match will take place at the Uyo Township Stadium, where Akwa United will look to establish a strong foundation for the season under their new leadership.
