NISO blames gas shortages, low water levels for drop in power generation

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said on Thursday that a drop in electricity generation on the national grid is being caused by gas supply constraints at thermal power plants and reduced water levels at hydroelectric stations.

NISO explained that insufficient gas deliveries have prevented several thermal generating plants from operating at their full capacity, limiting the amount of power they can contribute to the grid.

At the same time, lower inflows into reservoir dams have weakened the output of the country’s hydroelectric power stations, further curbing overall generation.

The shortfall has reduced the volume of electricity allocated to distribution companies (DisCos), leading to shorter supply hours and increased load‑shedding across distribution networks. NISO noted that the impact varies among DisCos, depending on the amount of generation each is allocated.

While acknowledging the difficulties faced by consumers nationwide, NISO thanked the public and other stakeholders for raising concerns and said it is working to diversify the grid’s energy mix to improve supply security. The operator reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining grid stability, optimising dispatch of available generation, and ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national grid.
