The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow after the deaths of several individuals during an enforcement operation aimed at curbing suspected illegal mining activities in the Wushishi/Lukoto area of Niger State.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, conveyed the government’s condolences to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the state government, the people of Niger State, traditional leaders, residents of Wushishi, and especially the families of those who perished.
“The safeguarding of Nigerian citizens’ lives, dignity and fundamental rights is a paramount obligation,” Idris said. “The circumstances surrounding these deaths require a comprehensive, transparent and impartial inquiry.”
In response, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo, has suspended the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, and has ordered a full investigation into the incident.
“The expeditious measures implemented by the Honourable Minister of Interior demonstrate the gravity with which the Federal Government approaches this situation. The investigation shall determine precisely what transpired, and the Government will implement suitable measures according to its conclusions,” Idris added.
Idris stressed that while the government remains committed to suppressing unlawful mining and other criminal activities that threaten national security, economic resources and the environment, all enforcement operations must be carried out within legal frameworks and with respect for human life and dignity. He urged calm in Wushishi and across Niger State, and prayed for the repose of the deceased and strength for their families and the wider community.
