Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case in the capital city of Abuja after a woman who had travelled from Uganda tested positive for the virus.
The patient began showing symptoms on 7 October and was admitted to an Abuja hospital four days later, on 11 October. She was subsequently diagnosed with Ebola by the hospital’s medical staff.
Health officials said the woman arrived from Uganda, but the exact date of her arrival in Nigeria remains unknown. The ministry has not yet released further details about her travel history.
Ebola is a severe hemorrhagic fever that can cause high mortality rates if not treated promptly. The disease has previously caused outbreaks across several West African countries.
As Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country, authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent further spread of the virus.
