National Grid: NISO explains cause of reduced power supply nationwide

On Thursday, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) said the country’s electricity generation has fallen because of gas supply constraints to thermal power plants and lower output from hydroelectric stations.

According to NISO, limited gas availability has reduced the operating capacity of affected thermal generating stations, while lower water inflows into reservoirs have cut the generation capacity of hydroelectric power plants.

The shortfall in available electricity has meant that Distribution Companies (DisCos) receive less power for onward supply to consumers, resulting in shorter supply hours and more frequent load shedding across the distribution network. The extent of the impact varies with the generation available and the allocations made to individual DisCos.

NISO acknowledges the impact of the current generation shortfall on electricity consumers nationwide and appreciates the concerns expressed by members of the public and other stakeholders.

While NISO is actively working on diversifying the national grid’s energy mix to secure supply, it remains committed to maintaining grid stability, optimising the dispatch of available generation, and ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national grid within prevailing operational constraints.
