The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has initiated a campaign to remove sachet alcoholic drinks and beverages with volumes below 200ml from shops and markets in Edo State.
The agency's enforcement operations were carried out in Benin City on Friday, targeting Mission Road and New Benin Market. According to Mr Ugwu Agu, the Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement, South-South/South-East Zone, the move is based on credible intelligence indicating the presence of such products in the area.
Mr. Ugwu Agu said, "We had credible intelligence that these alcohol products are in this place. So, we came here, we saw it, and we are mopping it up and taking it away from circulation. That is what the law says.”
The campaign is aimed at sending a warning signal that the sale of such products is no longer tolerable under existing regulations. Agu added that limiting access to alcohol, particularly for individuals below 18 years, is in line with resolutions approved by NAFDAC and the World Health Assembly.
