Ex-INEC Commissioner Mike Igini: Most Public Officials Should Be in Prison
Former Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini, has claimed that most people currently occupying public office in Nigeria should be behind bars.
"The 2027 general elections will be more than a test. INEC will be judged, and officials [and] judiciary will be judged. More importantly, the politicians who are seeking political office will be judged. Most of the characters you see today in public offices are supposed to be candidates for prison," Igini said on Channels Television's Sunday Politics.
Igini expressed concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria, stating that the country is currently operating under the rule of individuals instead of the rule of law. He highlighted that laws are being violated daily.
"Where were they when we were fighting for democracy in this country?" he asked, referring to the individuals in power.
The ex-INEC Commissioner also warned about the infiltration of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lists by politicians to manipulate elections by adding fake corps members as ad hoc staff.
"Nigeria will not be able to fix its economy because development is embedded in political processes. If we cannot fix our politics, we cannot fix our economy," Igini concluded.
Mike Igini's comments come amidst ongoing debates and concerns about the state of democracy and governance in Nigeria.
