The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) says that expanding part‑time senior roles and introducing “co‑CEO” arrangements could help keep women in leadership positions and narrow Australia’s gender pay gap.

Research cited by the agency highlights that uneven caring responsibilities and a shortage of flexible work options have been key factors preventing women from remaining in senior roles.

WGEA recommends that employers make management structures more flexible, including the possibility of part‑time chief executive positions and shared‑leadership models, to accommodate the diverse needs of the workforce.

The agency also warned that resistance to gender‑equality initiatives is growing. It noted that, on average, Australian women earn $0.79 for every $1 earned by men, underscoring the urgency of addressing the pay gap.

By adopting more adaptable leadership arrangements, the agency argues that companies can both retain talented women and move toward closing the persistent wage disparity.
