Australian trekker Jordan Yap, 30, was found dead after disappearing on a remote section of Peru’s Huayhuash mountain range. Yap last made contact with friends and family on 14 September, just before embarking on a planned ten‑day solo trek along the high‑altitude trail, which lies about 400 km north‑east of Lima.
The Huayhuash range, part of the Andes, is renowned for its rugged peaks and isolated paths, attracting experienced hikers from around the world. Yap’s itinerary called for a solo crossing of the range, a challenge that requires careful preparation and self‑reliance.
Following the loss of contact, authorities and local search teams conducted efforts to locate the missing hiker. Their work ultimately led to the discovery of Yap’s body, confirming his death.
Yap’s family and friends released a statement urging the public to remember him for “the immense joy he brought to so many people’s lives.” They described him as a vibrant individual whose enthusiasm for adventure inspired those around him.
Peru’s mountain trails, including the Huayhuash circuit, continue to draw international trekkers seeking demanding wilderness experiences. Yap’s tragic outcome underscores the inherent risks associated with solo expeditions in remote high‑altitude environments.
