A 26‑year‑old Darwin man became $1 million richer after landing an 80 cm, red‑tagged barramundi during a night‑time fishing trip with his brother, part of a Northern Territory competition.

Matthew Maurice, who lives in the Northern Territory, finished a football training session on Thursday and then set out on a boat with his sibling, who was visiting from overseas. The pair were fishing after dark when Maurice hooked the prize‑winning fish.

The barramundi, measured at 80 cm and marked with a red tag, qualified for the competition’s top prize, which awards a million dollars to the angler who catches the designated fish.

“I’m just happy to catch fish,” Maurice said after the catch, emphasizing the simple pleasure of the sport despite the sizable payout.

Barramundi are a prized target for anglers across Australia, and the Northern Territory’s fishing contests are a popular way to promote the region’s abundant waterways and tourism.
