On Saturday, masked settlers in the West Bank village of Taybeh launched an attack on European diplomatic staff, including Belgium’s consul general, French and Polish diplomats and Catholic representatives, according to Belgium’s foreign minister.
Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said the assault was “unacceptable” and called for a thorough investigation. He added that the attackers had targeted the consular office and surrounding areas where the diplomats were working.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents frequently clash. The attack on diplomatic personnel is a rare escalation that has drawn condemnation from several European governments.
Details of the attack are still emerging, but the victims were reportedly unarmed and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrators or their motives.
