Atletico took advantage of the advantage, with Alejandro Grimaldo converting a penalty to give the hosts the lead. Jonathan David doubled the score in the 59th minute, while Real’s Anthony Rudiger headed in a late consolation goal.
With the defeat, Real Madrid now sit in third place on 15 points, one point behind Atletico after seven rounds of fixtures. Barcelona, who beat Sevilla the day before, remain at the top of the table.
LaLiga, Spain’s top football division, has seen a tight race at the summit, with the recent results keeping the title chase highly competitive.
