Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has disclosed that the 750‑kilometre Lagos‑Calabar Coastal Highway does not have a single, comprehensive engineering design covering the entire route.

Umahi’s remarks came as part of a broader discussion on the status of major infrastructure projects, highlighting a key shortfall in the planning stage of the coastal highway that is intended to link the country’s commercial hub, Lagos, with the southeastern city of Calabar.

The Lagos‑Calabar Coastal Highway is envisioned as a strategic corridor along the Atlantic coast, aimed at boosting trade, tourism and regional connectivity. Without a unified master design, each segment of the project may be subject to differing technical standards and construction approaches.

Officials warn that the absence of an overarching design could lead to delays, increased costs and potential inconsistencies in road quality, complicating efforts to deliver the highway on schedule.

Infrastructure development remains a priority for Nigeria, whose rapidly growing population and economy demand improved transport networks. The coastal highway, once completed, is expected to play a pivotal role in linking key economic zones across the nation’s southern belt.
