North Korean leader Kim Jong-un travelled to China via the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge on Saturday, marking his first known trip abroad in more than a year, South Korean officials said.

According to a government source quoted by Yonhap news agency, Kim arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong, Liaoning province, after taking a train from Pyongyang to the North Korean city of Sinuiju and crossing the bridge.

The New Yalu River Bridge, completed earlier this year, spans the Yalu River that separates North Korea and China, linking Sinuiju with Dandong and providing a new rail and road corridor for cross‑border traffic.

South Korean officials confirmed the visit but did not disclose the purpose or length of Kim’s stay in Dandong, noting that the trip was the first publicly known overseas movement by the North Korean leader since early 2025.

The crossing occurs against a backdrop of continued diplomatic and economic interaction between Pyongyang and Beijing, with China remaining North Korea’s main trading partner and a key conduit for supplies and diplomatic engagement.
