A prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member was rescued after a seven‑day kidnapping in Imo State, where the victim was beaten and forced to eat garri mixed with dirty water.

During the ordeal, the abductors repeatedly struck the victim and supplied only garri – a staple made from cassava – that was mixed with contaminated water, according to the survivor’s account.

The kidnapping lasted exactly seven days, after which the victim was freed and able to share the details of the abuse and deprivation.

Imo State lies in southeastern Nigeria and is part of the country’s Niger Delta region, an area that has experienced a rise in violent crime and abductions in recent years.

Prospective corps members are required by the NYSC program to serve for one year after graduation, and the incident highlights the risks that young Nigerians can face while traveling to begin their service.
