The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it is probing a batch of suspicious photographs that appear to have been generated by artificial intelligence and are listed in the preliminary voter register. The commission has pledged to remove any fraudulent entries before the register receives its final certification on December 15.

INEC is the body responsible for organising elections and maintaining the voter register in Nigeria, a country of over 200 million people where the register is a cornerstone of the democratic process. The preliminary register is compiled ahead of each election cycle and must be verified and cleaned before it is officially certified for use.

According to the commission, the flagged images raise concerns because they do not correspond to genuine biometric data and may have been created using AI tools. Such entries could undermine the integrity of the voter list if left unchecked.

INEC officials confirmed that a dedicated team will review the questionable photos, cross‑check them against existing records and delete any that are deemed fraudulent. The cleanup operation is slated to be completed well before the December 15 deadline for final certification.

The commission emphasized that the integrity of the voter register remains a top priority and that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure that only eligible voters are listed for upcoming elections.
