Nigerian baker Taiwo Aderayo recounts that she lost her leg as a child after a traditional bonesetter tied her injured limb to a ceiling fan, causing it to become irreversibly damaged.

Aderayo explained that after sustaining an injury, she was taken to a local bonesetter rather than a hospital. The practitioner, according to her account, secured the wounded leg to a ceiling fan in an attempt to immobilise it.

The makeshift method proved disastrous; the pressure and lack of proper medical care led to the loss of the limb. “I lost my leg after the bonesetter tied it to a ceiling fan,” Aderayo said.

Despite the trauma, Aderayo later trained as a baker and now runs her own business, using her experience to advocate for safer health practices.

Her story underscores the ongoing reliance on traditional bonesetters in parts of Nigeria, where access to formal medical facilities can be limited, and highlights the risks associated with unregulated treatment methods.
