During an inspection of the Abakaliki‑Afikpo stretch of the Cross River‑Ebonyi‑Benue‑Abuja Trans‑Saharan Highway, Ebonyi State Minister of Works Dave Umahi said he had “killed the PDP” when he left the party and vowed to keep it dead.
Umahi, who has served as Minister of Works since 2023, made the remarks while overseeing the highway project. He criticised the Peoples Democratic Party for what he described as a failure to honour the people of the Southeast and said, “We supported the PDP, voted for presidents in the PDP and when it was our time for them to honour us they did not honour us, they maltreated us but we have hope in APC and all the candidates of APC in Ebonyi State.”
“Wike is my good friend and brother, but there is no rainbow coalition in Ebonyi State. If Wike has candidates here, he has not told me, but his candidates cannot break our relationship,” Umahi said.
He added that there is no Rainbow Coalition in Ebonyi and that anyone who wishes to campaign in the state is free to do so, but warned that “if you want to foment crisis, we will run you out of the state. Nobody can foment crisis in Ebonyi State.”
Umahi’s comments come as the APC seeks to consolidate its position in the southeast, while the PDP remains a major political force in Nigeria. The Minister’s statements underline the growing rift between the two parties and the personal ties that cross party lines, as he maintains a friendship with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike despite their differing political affiliations.
