A military cardiologist has warned that hypertension and stress are significantly increasing the risk of heart disease among Nigeria’s armed forces personnel, and has called for regular medical checks, consistent exercise and healthier diets.

The doctor explained that elevated blood pressure and chronic stress place additional strain on the cardiovascular system, making soldiers more vulnerable to conditions such as coronary artery disease and heart attacks.

He urged the military hierarchy to institute routine screening for hypertension and stress‑related symptoms, stressing that early detection can prevent serious complications and reduce absenteeism.

To mitigate the risk, the cardiologist recommended a set of lifestyle measures for service members, including:

  • Engaging in regular physical activity appropriate to their duties.
  • Adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low in excessive salt.
  • Practising stress‑management techniques and seeking professional help when needed.

The remarks come as non‑communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular ailments, continue to rise across Africa, highlighting the need for proactive health strategies within the military and the wider population.
