Huawei doubles down on smartphones as EV sales slow

Huawei is intensifying its focus on smartphones after a slowdown in its electric‑vehicle (EV) sales and a sharp decline in consumer‑business revenue caused by U.S. sanctions that cut the segment’s earnings by roughly half.

The U.S. restrictions, first imposed in 2019, barred Huawei from accessing key American technologies and components, a move that the company says has dramatically reduced sales across its consumer products, including phones, wearables and other gadgets.

In response, Huawei’s leadership announced plans to rebuild the consumer arm by “doubling down” on its smartphone portfolio, aiming to launch new models and broaden distribution channels in both domestic and overseas markets.

While the firm has been expanding into the automotive sector, developing chips and software for EVs, the recent slowdown in those sales has prompted a strategic shift back toward its traditional strength in mobile devices.

Industry analysts note that the renewed smartphone push could help offset the revenue gap created by the sanctions, but they caution that ongoing export controls and competition from rivals will continue to pose significant challenges for Huawei’s recovery efforts.
