Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong was sentenced to 10 years in prison after a conviction for colluding with foreign entities in violation of the national security law.

Wong, who has been in custody since 2020, rose to prominence during the 2019 pro‑democracy protests, becoming one of the movement’s most visible figures.

The court found that Wong had engaged in activities that the authorities say amounted to collusion with foreign forces, a charge that carries severe penalties under the security legislation imposed by Beijing.

The national security law, introduced in 2020, criminalises acts deemed to threaten the sovereignty or security of China and has been used to prosecute a number of pro‑democracy activists.

Wong will serve his sentence at a Hong Kong prison, where he has already spent four years awaiting trial.
