Independent MP Helen Haines is in serious but stable condition after losing both legs in an alleged attack near her electorate office in north‑east Victoria on Monday afternoon, the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne said on Saturday morning.

The assault left Haines with severe injuries that required the amputation of both legs. She was taken to the Alfred Hospital for emergency treatment following the incident.

In a statement, the hospital said Haines’ condition had been downgraded from critical to serious but stable, and that she is receiving intensive care and ongoing medical support.

The hospital update was released Saturday morning, following the Monday afternoon attack.
