Dr Kelechi Ohiri, the Director‑General of Nigeria’s National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), said that health reforms must produce tangible outcomes and save lives rather than remain merely policy statements. He made the remarks in a recent statement addressing the country’s ongoing health‑sector innovations.

Ohiri stressed that every new health initiative should be evaluated for its real‑world impact, insisting that “health innovations must translate into measurable improvements and save lives, not just be policies.” He called for robust monitoring and data‑driven assessments to ensure that programmes deliver the intended benefits.

The NHIA, which administers Nigeria’s national health‑insurance scheme, has been tasked with expanding coverage and improving service quality across the nation’s fragmented health system. Persistent challenges such as limited access to care, high out‑of‑pocket expenses and uneven quality of services have made effective reform a priority.

In recent years the authority has rolled out several initiatives aimed at broadening insurance enrollment, strengthening primary‑care delivery and integrating digital health tools. Ohiri’s comments underscore the need for these programmes to move beyond rollout and demonstrate measurable health gains.

He urged policymakers, health‑care providers and other stakeholders to focus on outcomes, saying that only by linking reforms to clear, quantifiable results can Nigeria achieve the life‑saving impact that its citizens deserve.
