Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni described the day as “emotional” as the country’s football legend Lionel Messi announced the end of his international career.
Messi, who has represented Argentina since 2005, is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. His decision to step away from national duty marks the conclusion of a storied journey that has seen him lift multiple Copa America titles and a World Cup trophy.
“It was an emotional day,” Scaloni said in a post‑match press conference, reflecting on the moment when Messi’s final appearance for the national team was confirmed.
The announcement comes after a series of high‑profile matches in which Messi played a pivotal role in leading the squad. His departure will leave a significant gap in the Argentine lineup, prompting speculation about the team’s future strategy.
Scaloni’s comments underscore the deep respect and affection that the national side holds for Messi, who has become a symbol of Argentine football success over the past two decades.
