The governor of Tennessee announced that the state’s prisons chief, Frank Strada, will step aside following a failed execution attempt of death‑row inmate Christa Pike on Wednesday.
In a statement, Strada said that “stepping aside is in the best interests of the state” as an independent review is launched to determine why the execution failed.
Christa Pike’s execution attempt, carried out on Wednesday, did not result in her death, leaving her alive and prompting the review.
Tennessee is a state in the southeastern United States, and the incident has drawn national attention to the state’s capital punishment procedures.
The resignation is intended to allow the independent review to proceed without interference and to address concerns about the state’s execution protocols.
