Far-right presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro’s attempt to highlight his rival’s alleged corruption during a primetime television debate in Brazil has backfired, sparking a wave of viral memes on social media. The incident occurred on the eve of the country’s presidential election runoff, where Bolsonaro faced off against leftwing opponent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro arrived at the debate with the word “corrupto,” Portuguese for corrupt, written on the palm of his hand. His publicists and campaign team had intended the gesture to be an ingenious move that would expose the supposed crookedness of his rival to the Brazilian public.
However, the stunt did not achieve its intended effect. Instead of focusing solely on the accusation, viewers and social media users quickly turned the gesture into a subject of parody. The image of the politician holding up his hand became a template for widespread internet jokes, diluting the seriousness of the political message.
The viral reaction highlights the unpredictable nature of political communication in the digital age, where a calculated visual cue can be rapidly recontextualized by the public. For Bolsonaro’s campaign, the moment has shifted from a potential highlight reel clip to a source of ridicule in the run-up to the final vote.
Brazil’s presidential election runoff pits the far-right Bolsonaro against the leftwing Lula da Silva, with both candidates competing for the presidency in a highly polarized political landscape. The debate was a key event in the final days of the campaign, drawing significant attention from domestic and international observers.
