The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has reversed its position and endorsed FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s re‑election, after the AFC’s president had previously criticised Infantino over a failed private investment plan.
During the past year, the AFC president had been a vocal critic of Infantino’s attempts to bring private investment into FIFA, arguing that the plan had not delivered the promised benefits and had failed to meet expectations.
In a recent statement, the AFC president announced his support for Infantino’s bid for a second term, signalling a significant shift in the Confederation’s stance.
The AFC is the governing body for football in Asia, representing 47 national associations across the continent. Its endorsement carries weight in the global football community.
Infantino’s re‑election, now backed by the AFC, will be decided at the upcoming FIFA Congress, where member associations will vote on the future leadership of the sport’s worldwide governing body.
