The Federal Government has stepped up its push to overhaul Nigeria’s road transport sector, holding a high‑profile meeting in Abuja on Thursday to chart a path toward a $1 trillion economy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The gathering brought together senior officials and industry stakeholders, including Senior Special Assistant to the President on Transportation and Mobility Adetokunbo Ademola Ade‑John, Technical Adviser to the Vice President on Transportation, Logistics and Innovation Segun Obayendo, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Joint Revenue Board, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking at the event, Ade‑John said the Tinubu administration remains committed to repositioning Nigeria’s transportation sector as a key driver of economic growth, national productivity and improved mobility. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies and industry stakeholders, and called for coordinated reforms, innovation, road safety and strategic investments in transportation infrastructure to support the Renewed Hope Agenda and the broader economic transformation objectives.
“The Bola Tinubu administration remains committed to repositioning Nigeria’s transportation sector as a key driver of economic growth, national productivity and improved mobility, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies and industry stakeholders,” Ade‑John said.
The session featured a presentation on the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) by its Managing Director Abimbola Akinajo, followed by a technical workshop titled “Repositioning Road Transport for $1 Trillion Dollar Economy.” The workshop examined how an efficient road transport system can facilitate trade, improve connectivity, strengthen logistics and support Nigeria’s economic expansion.
The Federal Road Safety Corps presented the National Road Safety Advisory Council Status Report, highlighting the need for institutional cooperation and enhanced safety measures across the country’s road transport system.
Other participants included the Commissioner of Transportation for Ogun State, the Chairman of the Nigerian Transport Commissioners Forum, the National President of the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and representatives from the Nigeria Police Force. The meeting underscored the government’s drive to foster a safer, more efficient and economically productive road transport sector through stakeholder collaboration and institutional reforms.
