Residents along the Gwagwa‑Airport railway corridor in Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have called on the federal government and the FCT administration for an update on the stalled rail project, saying that work on key components such as power supply and station facilities has slowed markedly.
Abubakar Rilwanu, a resident of Gwagwa, noted that construction activity along the corridor appears to have “slowed considerably,” especially the work required for power supply infrastructure and other facilities needed for the three stations that sit on the Gwagwa‑Airport axis of the 12‑station line linking the Central Business District to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
“It beats our imagination that a critical segment involving railway stations would take this long to complete,” Rilwanu said, urging authorities to disclose the project’s current status and an expected timeline for completion.
Rilwanu added that finishing the railway would deliver economic benefits, including reducing or eliminating the reliance on diesel‑powered generators at the stations by connecting them to the national electricity grid. Another resident, Ishaya Madaki, expressed similar concerns, questioning why a heavily funded infrastructure project is progressing so slowly and warning that the delay “does not send a good signal about this administration, especially as this is the nation’s capital.”
Efforts to obtain a response from the construction company were unsuccessful; calls to its designated public enquiries line went unanswered at the time of reporting. Residents are urging the relevant authorities to engage the contractor and other stakeholders to address outstanding issues and ensure the project moves toward completion.
