The European Union has pledged a €14 million grant to help Nigeria roll out 90,000 km of fibre‑optic cable as part of a nationwide broadband expansion plan.

The funding is aimed at building a high‑speed network that would connect remote and underserved areas across the country, boosting digital access for businesses, schools and households.

Under the project, the new fibre network will be laid throughout Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, creating a backbone that can support future growth in internet services.

“This grant will accelerate the deployment of critical broadband infrastructure and bring the country closer to a fully connected future,” said a spokesperson for the European Union.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve digital connectivity in Africa, where many regions still lack reliable high‑speed internet access.
