Military and pro‑government forces recaptured the airport in Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, as fighting also intensified in the neighboring Amhara and Afar regions.
The seizure of the airport represents a notable advance for the federal government in a conflict that has pitted the Ethiopian National Defense Force against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) since late 2020.
According to statements from the Ethiopian Ministry of Defense, the airport, which had been under rebel control for several months, was taken after heavy combat. No official casualty figures have been released for the operation.
At the same time, armed clashes have been reported in Amhara and Afar, where federal troops and allied militias are confronting TPLF‑aligned fighters, indicating that the hostilities are spreading beyond Tigray’s borders.
The government’s latest gains come amid ongoing international calls for a cease‑fire and unhindered humanitarian access to the war‑affected north, while officials say the military campaign will continue until rebel forces are neutralised.
