Cameroon’s opposition party, the Mouvement Réformateur du Cameroun (MRC), announced that Pierre Emmanuel Binyam has withdrawn his candidacy for the party’s presidency. The decision was communicated through a statement released by Binyam’s spokesperson.

In the official communiqué, the spokesperson said that “the necessary conditions for our participation no longer seem to be met,” indicating that the candidate no longer feels the environment is conducive to a fair contest.

The MRC, which was founded in 1990 and has been a vocal critic of the ruling government, is currently holding internal elections to choose a new leader. These elections are closely watched as they could shape the party’s strategy ahead of upcoming national polls.

Binyam’s withdrawal reduces the number of contenders in the race, though the party has not disclosed how many other candidates remain or whether any further withdrawals are expected.

The MRC said it will continue with the scheduled voting process, emphasizing its commitment to democratic procedures within the party despite the setback.
