EFInA Urges SMEs to Explore Funding Beyond Bank Loans

EFInA, a leading financial inclusion organization in Nigeria, has encouraged small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to consider funding options beyond traditional bank loans for sustainable business growth.

Speaking at a recent seminar, EFInA's CEO, Foyinsolami Akinjayeju, emphasized the importance of exploring alternative funding sources to avoid unsustainable debt burdens. According to Akinjayeju, "Access to funding is critical for SMEs to thrive, and relying solely on bank loans can limit their growth potential."

Akinjayeju highlighted the role of non-bank financial institutions, venture capitalists, and crowdfunding platforms as viable funding options for SMEs. He also encouraged SMEs to consider partnerships with larger companies as a means to access funding and market knowledge.

The EFInA CEO urged SMEs to take advantage of government initiatives, such as the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Bank Guarantee Scheme, which guarantees up to N50 million ($130,000) per SME. He also advised SMEs to explore the benefits of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF), which provides funding for business development and expansion.

EFInA's call for alternative funding options comes at a time when Nigeria's SME sector is experiencing significant growth. According to the Small Business Administration, SMEs contribute around 45% of Nigeria's GDP and employ over 80% of the country's workforce.

Akinjayeju emphasized that expanding financing options will not only benefit SMEs but also contribute to the overall development of the Nigerian economy. "By providing SMEs with diverse funding sources, we can empower entrepreneurs, create jobs, and drive economic growth in Nigeria," he said.

EFInA aims to promote financial inclusion and support the growth of Nigeria's financial sector. The organization focuses on increasing access to financial services for unbanked and underbanked populations, thereby contributing to the development of a robust financial ecosystem.
