The Ugandan Ministry of Health said that a traveller who later tested positive for the Bundibugyo virus in Nigeria showed no symptoms before leaving Uganda.

Bundibugyo virus is a strain of the Ebola virus disease that was first identified during an outbreak in western Uganda in 2007. Like other Ebola strains, it can cause severe haemorrhagic fever and is transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals.

According to the ministry’s statement, the individual departed Uganda while asymptomatic and was subsequently diagnosed after arriving in Nigeria. The health authorities in both countries are monitoring the case, but no additional infections have been reported.

The ministry highlighted that the lack of symptoms prior to travel underscores the importance of vigilant screening and rapid testing for travellers from regions where Ebola‑type viruses have been detected.

Health officials in the region continue to advise the public to follow standard infection‑prevention measures and to seek medical attention promptly if any symptoms of Ebola‑like illness develop.
