The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the son of former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, and handed him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja on Monday.

Operatives of the DSS tracked Faisal to the Karsana area of Abuja after credible intelligence indicated that he had secretly returned to the country. The fugitive had been on the run since 2020 following a conviction by the EFCC.

In 2021, a court found Faisal guilty of three counts of money laundering and conspiracy, sentencing him to 14 years in prison. The trial had proceeded in his absence after he violated bail conditions and fled abroad. Justice Okon Abang ordered that Faisal be arrested wherever he was located in Nigeria and remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence, and that the federal government take lawful steps to secure his extradition if found outside the country.

“The handover of Faisal to the EFCC is expected to facilitate the enforcement of the Court’s judgment and ensure that he serves his sentence in accordance with the law,” a source said.

Faisal’s arrest and transfer to the EFCC marks a significant step in the enforcement of the court’s 2021 ruling and the broader effort to hold former officials accountable for financial crimes.
