Police in Delta State, Nigeria, have arrested a 26-year-old man identified as Sunday Nimel, who is suspected of leading an armed robbery syndicate in Asaba. The arrest, which took place on October 7, 2026, resulted in the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, locally made firearms, and live ammunition.

According to a statement released on Saturday by Delta State Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe, operatives from the CP Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) in Ughelli conducted the raid at approximately 22:30 hours. The operation was intelligence-led and carried out in collaboration with local vigilantes.

SP Edafe stated that Nimel is allegedly responsible for several residential armed robbery operations in Asaba and its surrounding areas. Following his apprehension, the suspect provided information during interrogation that led police to a hideout near Okpanam City Gate.

At the hideout, investigators recovered one AK-47 rifle, three rounds of live ammunition, and two locally made cut-to-size guns. The police statement noted that the investigation into the suspect’s activities remains ongoing.

Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Samuel E. Erale commended the operatives for the successful operation, reiterating the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and the dismantling of criminal networks across the state.

CP Erale also urged residents to continue supporting the police by providing credible information, assuring the public that the command remains dedicated to protecting lives and property.
