Delta State Government on Saturday expressed condolences to the family of the late Unity Adeda, a Level 16 civil servant in the Ministry of Secondary Education, after he died following an alleged altercation at his workplace. The government also pledged that the investigation will be thorough and that justice will not be perverted.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, led a delegation of senior officials—including Chief of Staff to the Governor Hon. Johnson Erijo, Permanent Secretary of the SSG’s Office Mr. Lucky Nkemachor, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Community Development Mrs. Kevwe Agas, and Executive Secretary of the State Pensions Bureau Mr. Lawson Efenudu—to meet the family and convey the administration’s sorrow.
Emu said the incident has placed the entire state in mourning, stressing that “every life means a lot to the state and the government,” whether the person is a senior or junior officer. He noted that the police investigation is still ongoing and that preliminary accounts suggest an internal workplace conflict escalated into the fatal incident.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure a comprehensive probe, and the state has constituted an administrative panel made up of serving and retired civil servants to examine the circumstances and strengthen internal conflict‑resolution mechanisms. “The essence of the administrative panel is not to conflict with the judicial process or the police investigation. It is to help us rebuild our system and enrich our conflict‑management process,” Emu said.
“We met with labour yesterday and what labour wanted was reassurance that there would be justice…All of these things have been done. The entire justice process has started, and we are convinced that having seen the sincerity and transparency of government, labour will do the needful,” Emu added.
Labour leaders were consulted on Thursday and were assured that the workplace remains safe for civil servants. Emu urged staff to remain calm, continue their duties, and trust that the government is committed to protecting lives and ensuring a peaceful working environment.
Representing the family, Mr. Godwin Akamakusi, a relative of the deceased, thanked Governor Oborevwori and the delegation, urging the authorities “to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the death are fully investigated and that justice is served.”
