The Nigeria Customs Service announced on Sunday that it is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) and digital‑intelligence tools to counter fake news and online scams that it says are damaging its reputation.

Comptroller‑General of Customs Bashir Adeniyi made the disclosure in a statement released in Abuja by the service’s spokesperson, Deputy Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada. The announcement was made during Adeniyi’s remarks at the 2026 Nigerian Council of …, according to the agency’s release.

Adeniyi said the new AI‑driven systems will monitor digital platforms for misinformation and fraudulent activities that target the customs agency, allowing officials to respond more quickly and protect the service’s public image.

The move comes as Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, grapples with a surge in online scams and the spread of false information that can undermine public confidence in government institutions.

Customs officials did not provide details on the specific technologies or partners involved in the AI deployment, but indicated that the tools will enhance the agency’s capacity to identify and neutralise deceptive content online.

Deputy Comptroller Maiwada reiterated the service’s commitment to leveraging modern technology to safeguard its operations and maintain trust with the Nigerian public.
