Police in Calabar, Cross River State, averted a potential clash between supporters of the Peter Obi/Rabiu Kwankwaso political movement and a large group of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters on Wednesday.

The confrontation unfolded as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) prepared to host a presidential town‑hall meeting at a prominent hotel on Murtala Muhammed Highway. A street rally by APC supporters, including members of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), had gathered nearby, creating a volatile mix of crowds.

Security operatives intervened to separate the groups, diverting the APC rally and blocking the highway to prevent the Obi‑Kwankwaso supporters from obstructing the venue. The hotel management subsequently restricted access to its premises while officers maintained order around the facility.

Later, the Obi‑Kwankwaso convoy was attacked in the Watt Market area of Calabar after returning from the palace of the Obong of Calabar. Hoodlums, suspected to be political thugs from other parties, damaged some cars in the convoy.

Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata confirmed both incidents and said a suspect had been apprehended. He identified the suspect as 27‑year‑old Victor Edet Duke.

“The command’s timely intervention and engagement with the groups prevented a possible confrontation,” said Akata. “Police officers promptly engaged both groups when they converged in front of the hotel. The operatives appealed to the parties to exercise restraint, maintain peace and ensure their activities were conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.”

The incident highlights the heightened political tensions in the region as parties prepare for the upcoming presidential election.
