At the United Nations climate conference COP31, scheduled to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, Nigeria and a coalition of other African countries will make securing adequate and predictable climate finance a top negotiating priority, the African negotiating group said in a statement released ahead of the summit.

The group emphasized that grant‑based and concessional funding are especially critical for the continent, arguing that such financing must be reliable and sufficient to support Africa’s mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Africa remains one of the regions most exposed to climate‑related risks, with many of its economies dependent on external resources to build resilient infrastructure, protect vulnerable communities and transition to low‑carbon development pathways.

Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and a major emitter on the continent, is expected to play a leading role in articulating these demands, aligning its position with fellow African states to push for clearer commitments on climate finance from the UNFCCC process.

The outcome of these negotiations will shape how African nations can access the financial support needed to implement climate projects, with the bloc urging the international community to honour existing pledges and deliver new, predictable funding streams.
