Israel’s Prime Minister delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, a move that drew attention because he is currently subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The General Assembly, which convenes annually in New York to discuss global issues, welcomed the Israeli leader’s appearance. The Prime Minister addressed the assembly in person, a first for an Israeli head of government in recent years.
In 2023 the ICC issued an arrest warrant for the Prime Minister, alleging that he may be responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The warrant was issued after the court’s investigation into the conduct of Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.
Despite the warrant, the Prime Minister was able to travel to the United Nations and speak before the assembly. The ICC’s jurisdiction extends to individuals accused of serious international crimes, but the court does not have enforcement powers in all countries.
The UN General Assembly’s decision to allow the Prime Minister to speak was seen by some observers as a contrast to the ICC’s legal actions. The assembly’s proceedings remain a key platform for states to present their positions on international security and human rights issues.
